How to conditionally format individual rows or column measures in tableau

Almost every tableau user must have already known excel, conditional formatting of individual rows or columns is very easy to do in excel. It has to be handled differently in tableau with the help of marks card for individual measures. When we create reports, we generally use "Measure Values" field in tableau, where we generally drag measure values or any calculated field onto the color in marks card section. This will generally apply the same color coding to all the measures being used. But what if you want to apply different colors to different measures.

This post will let you know how to unlock a great deal of formatting flexibility that is not transparent in tableau. We need to have individual marks card to apply the color coding individually for each measure. To achieve this we need to create placeholders.

In the above screenshot if you see I only want to show three measures in the report and I selected those in the measure values and excluded the remaining. Now as you see there is only one marks card. So when I tried to use a calculated field or anything else for applying the color code it applies the same to all three measures. So now we need individual marks card for three different measures to apply color coding for different measures. For this you need to create a placeholder as shown below:

So I need to copy paste the same placeholder in the rows section for three times so we can get three different marks card as below.

As you see above I placed the same placeholder three times side by side and then you can find there are three different marks cards. Now you can have your own color formatting either by selecting individual colors or by using calculated fields and dragging them separately onto the marks cards.

Hope you have got what you need!!!
